Happy Belated National Coming Out Day from Bama Boi Blues!
If you didn’t know, October 11th, 2016 was National Coming Out Day. Honestly, I forgot all about this day when it happened, but social media did a good job of reminding me. Fortunately, I had the idea to interview my mom about the night I came out to her.
I’ll tell you now, this interview was impromptu. All I had was my smart phone, my scraggly beard, and my beautiful mother. Sitting on the front porch of my childhood home in Birmingham, AL, I asked my mom a few questions. What resulted was an endearing and funny exchange between a Black mother and son about sexuality and acceptance.
Furthermore, this video shows a narrative that we don’t often see within the Black Community. We definitely need more videos like this, along with another fave coming out vid of mine, to show different sides of family love. No, not every coming out story will be perfect; we know this. However, no matter what happens, coming out is liberating.
I’m so happy my mom agreed to film this with me, but not before she put on some lipstick, LOL! I first posted this vid to my Facebook page, and I received so much love for it. So, I wanted to share it here on Bama Boi Blues. I can only hope it inspires other Black LGBTQ to have a conversation with their loved ones about coming out.
But enough of the filler text! Check out my video below! Share it with others, but excuse my bummy appearance! You’ll fall in love with my Ma, Mary T.!
Love ya, Ma!
